Die Prüfung besteht aus leistungsbezogenen Fragen und wird in einer Live- oder simulierten Umgebung durchgeführt. MOS 2013 stellt dem Kandidaten ein Projekt zur Verfügung, in dem er aufeinander aufbauende Aufgaben und Schritte erstellen soll.
Die Prüfung umfasst 40–60 Fragen.

Die Bestehensnote ist von Prüfung zu Prüfung unterschiedlich und wird auf dem Ergebnisbericht angegeben.
Richtlinien zur Wiederholung der Prüfung zum Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS)
- Wenn ein Kandidat bei einer Prüfung beim ersten Versuch die erforderliche Punktzahl nicht erreicht, muss er 24 Stunden warten, bevor er die Prüfung wiederholen kann.
- Wenn ein Kandidat beim zweiten Mal die erforderliche Punktzahl nicht erreicht, muss er 2 Tage (48 Stunden) warten, bevor er die Prüfung ein drittes Mal wiederholen kann.
- Zwischen den einzelnen Wiederholungsprüfungen wird eine Wartezeit von zwei Tagen eingehalten.
- Für die Anzahl der Versuche zur gleichen Prüfung gibt es keine jährliche Begrenzung.
- Wenn ein Kandidat eine Office-Prüfung mit ausreichender Punktzahl besteht, kann er sie wiederholen.
